An explorative industry survey has been launched by Scottish Games Network, seeking to provide a comprehensive analysis of the skills required to support the growth of the Scottish games industry including esports. This initiative, a partnership between Scottish Games Network, EKOS, and Skills Development Scotland (SDS), demonstrates a collaborative effort to strengthen the sector.

The survey aims to gather data on the current and future skills needs of the Scottish games industry, with a particular focus on identifying skills gaps and informing training programmes. For Scottish-based esports organisations, this survey is a crucial opportunity to ensure that the unique skills requirements of the sector are recognised and addressed.

The research will focus on three key areas:

  • The Shape and Scale of the Games Sector: Mapping the breadth of the games ecosystem, including esports and the wider support ecosystem.
  • Current Education and Training Provision: Assessing the existing educational pathways and training opportunities available to aspiring and established game developers.
  • Skills Challenges Facing Scottish Games Sector Employers: Identifying the specific skills gaps and challenges hindering the growth of game studios and related businesses.

Esports is a growing sector in Scotland, and requires specific skill sets. This survey will help identify what skills, and help to ensure that training and skills needs can be met with appropriate support in the future.
