Following the successful recent development of the HNC Esports, we are delighted to share that Qualifications Scotland has officially commenced the creation of a new Higher National Diploma (HND) in Esports. This marks another important step in building robust, formalised educational pathways for the Scottish esports ecosystem.
A Collaborative Approach to Curriculum Design
The inaugural meeting of the Qualification Development Team (QDT) has already taken place, bringing together a cross-section of stakeholders, including representatives from colleges, universities, and industry employers.
We are proud to announce that Scottish Esports is actively supporting this development as a dedicated member of the QDT. Our involvement, alongside other key partners, ensures the new qualification will be grounded in academic rigour while remaining highly relevant to the current needs and infrastructure of the Scottish esports industry in 2026.
Key Developments and Timelines
A “Next Gen” Qualification: The new HND will be designed as a stand-alone “Next Gen” qualification, offering a distinct and comprehensive educational tier for students progressing in the field.
Development Roadmap: Qualifications Scotland anticipates a six-month development phase to fully structure and design the qualification.
Qualification Lead Developer: Dr Gavin Baxter from University of the West of Scotland has recently announced that he has been selected to lead the development with the the Computing team at Qualification Scotland.
Building on the Success of the NPA in Esports
The initiation of the HND development is a natural and essential progression, building directly upon the recently developed HNC Esports and the established success of the National Progression Award (NPA) in Esports. Currently being delivered in 30+ schools and colleges across the country at SCQF Levels 4, 5, and 6, the NPA has proven to be a significant stepping stone for Scottish students looking to learn and understand more about the esports industry. Local authorities including the Scottish Borders Council have integrated esports into their offerings with great success and feedback from students studying the course.
By covering core industry pillars, event management, game performance, and transferrable digital skills, the NPA has laid a robust groundwork for early-stage esports education. The upcoming HND will provide the crucial next steps in this journey, ensuring learners have a clear, continuous academic pathway from secondary education right through to advanced sector employment.
To learn more about how the NPA in Esports is currently engaging pupils and bridging the digital skills gap, we recommend reading Qualifications Scotland’s insightful article on the qualification’s nationwide delivery.
Get Involved in Scottish esports education
The continued success of esports education relies heavily on active participation from educators, industry professionals, and community organisations across the country. Qualifications Scotland has noted that it is not too late for stakeholders to join the process and help build these critical pathways.
